Tips for Building Your Copywriting Portfolio
There are several ways you can start building your portfolio. Here are several suggestions to get you started.
- Search your memory bank. Maybe you wrote a good sales letter, bulletin, or newsletter article for your current or previous employer that could serve as a sample of your writing expertise.
- Join your local Chamber of Commerce. Small businesses often need help with writing assignments—everything from newsletters to ads to brochures.
- Offer to do pro bono work for your favorite charity or help with your church newsletter.
- Look for a freelance association and hook up with a few freelance designers. Designers are often asked if they can write copy or if they know anyone who can.
- Offer to do work on spec or at a reduced price.
- Pick up the phone. If you make enough calls, sooner or later you’ll reach a hot prospect that needs a writer right away.
And, remember that as part of the AWAI copywriting program, we offer reviews of your two practice sales letters. These would be strong additions to your portfolio.
