A Preview of Tuesday’s Live Self-Made Writer Meeting … and an Unexpected Realization
By Sandy Franks

One of the things that has surprised me most about The Self-Made Writer is how quickly the community has formed.

As I write this, we're already at 230 members, and what I've been reading inside the Facebook group has been incredibly encouraging. (If you’re not a member yet, you can join as a Founding Member until midnight TONIGHT here.)

What strikes me isn't how different the members are. It's how similar their stories are.

Again and again, I'm hearing from people who have spent years collecting ideas, writing articles, researching topics, filling notebooks, starting books, launching projects, and creating things they care deeply about.

They're not lacking ideas.

In many cases, they already have more material than they realize.

What they're looking for is a way to connect those pieces into something meaningful:

  • A body of work.
  • A newsletter.
  • A book.
  • A platform.
  • A business.

Or simply a creative life that feels more intentional.

That's what has me excited.

This isn't a group of people looking for the next shiny object.

It's a group of people looking for a way to finally build something from the ideas they've been carrying around for years.

I'm also excited about our first live session on June 30.

Before the session, members are completing their Self-Made Writer Inventory, an exercise designed to help them identify what they've already created, what themes keep showing up in their work, and what they may want to build next. (For members, this is on your myAWAI Member Page.)

One of the things we'll discuss is something I think many writers struggle with: they have multiple projects they want to pursue, but limited time to work on them.

We'll talk about choosing a primary focus, protecting time for meaningful work, and creating steady momentum instead of waiting for the perfect conditions.

Perhaps the one thing that excites me the most is the realization that many members aren't actually starting from scratch.

They're starting from accumulation.

They already have stories. They already have ideas. They already have experiences worth sharing.

Now the work becomes helping them recognize the value of what they already possess and turn it into something that grows over time.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when a community of writers stops asking, "What should I create?" and starts asking, "What am I building?"

P.S. One unexpected realization from these first few weeks is that The Self-Made Writer may be developing a set of core beliefs, not just a curriculum.

For example, one idea that keeps showing up in member conversations is this:

You are not starting from scratch. You are starting from accumulation.

As I mentioned, many members already have stories, research, unfinished projects, books, newsletters, and ideas they've been carrying around for years. What they're looking for isn't another idea. They're looking for a way to connect those pieces into something meaningful.

I think this may become one of the defining beliefs of the membership.

If you’re not part of our community yet, I hope you’ll join us before Tuesday so you can be part of this first meeting too.
