Inside AWAI

  • BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! “The number one reason people don’t get started with their own money-making website,” says Nick Usborne, “is because they’re concerned about not being able to do it alone.

“And the number one reason people who do get started don’t succeed is that they run out of momentum and lose confidence along the way.”

Well, Nick’s figured out how to make sure neither of those scenarios happens to you.

The secret? “Being held to a schedule,” says Nick, “and having dozens of other people to help you and support you. It makes all the difference.”

  • Barter your way to new clients. In this week’s issue of Wealthy Web Writer, Mindy Tyson McHorse taught readers how to effectively barter their services to land new clients, and receive some pretty big payoffs as well. WWW member Julie Gubler told Mindy …

I belong to a bartering group … and I have gotten work from someone across the country. The client paid me to write articles … paid me for the research as well as the writing. It has been great because now I have a couple of samples to show other clients.”

If you missed the article, you can read it here.

  • Try bartering and win a copy of Nick Usborne’s Copywriting 2.0. Ready to give bartering a shot? Use it to land a new client and you could win a free copy of Nick Usborne’s Copywriting 2.0, the authoritative guide writing web copy that converts.

It’s all part of the Reality Blog Challenge, a series of monthly contests from the Wealthy Web Writer’s Reality Blog, which is open to all Wealthy Web Writer Platinum Members.

Remember, bartering your web-writing services is a win-win. It’s an easy way to land a client, get a sample for your portfolio, and even get a positive testimonial if all goes well. It can even bring you a value higher than any cash compensation. Plus, it’s fun — you might discover a new hobby you’re good at.

Stretch your bartering rewards even further and compete in the Reality Blog Challenge!

  • This could be the easiest (and most rewarding) job a writer could ever have. One of the great things about learning copywriting and the art of persuasion is there are so many ways to use your skills to generate a very good income. Over the years we’ve shown you lots of ways to be paid very well through your persuasive writing: sales letters, e-mails, website pages, ads, catalogue copy, the list goes on and on …

Tuesday, however, we’ll be introducing a brand new way to use your copywriting skills that’s a little different.

    • Here, there’s very little writing, per se – but you’ll still be using the persuasion skills you’re learning now.
    • You’re won’t be writing to a large group, typically just four or five people at a time.
    • You won’t have to convince the people to whom you’re writing to open their wallets, it is their “job,” as it were, to write checks.
    • Like traditional copywriters, you can make very good money doing this … and work full or part-time from home (or anywhere) on your own hours.
    • There’s also a huge demand for this: an estimated 100,000 organizations could use your help once you’re up and running in this business … and likely dozens of them are in your hometown.
    • Unlike copywriting though, there’s not as much to “learn” with this … you can be up and running and “in business” with everything you need very quickly.
    • And, here’s the other thing about this type of writing: Money aside, it’s probably the most rewarding work a writer could ever do.

Any idea what I might be talking about? (If you’re thinking “writing for the fundraising market,” that’s not it.)

Please be sure to watch your e-mail Tuesday for details on this very exciting, “anyone-can-do-it-and-you-don’t-need-to-be-a-superstar-copywriter-to-be-successful” opportunity. Not only can you be the first to jump on this tremendous opportunity, but we’re offering a very good deal to the first people to get in.

  • A slice of Americana. Baseball … a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places … and an entrepreneurial spirit. They all tie together in an interesting tale of “How I used my copywriting skills to buy a mansion for $40,000.”

As you may know, Don Mahoney, co-founder of AWAI, started his copywriting career under the tutelage of Michael Masterson when he was a woodworker in upstate New York. He went on to write winning controls for numerous clients, then started his own successful direct-marketing business in Florida.

Now he’s back in New York, this time as the proud owner of a home built in 1795 near the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. It’s a long story, but Don has a soft spot for buildings in disrepair, and this one is in need of total restoration. Don tells the story best at http://www.andrewmanninn.com/hope.html.

If you click on the Home page of that website, you’ll see a picture of the Andrew Mann Inn the way it looks like today – and you’ll find out why Don needs your help. You can even see Don’s portfolio on the site (not his copywriting portfolio – his restoration one!). This is a rare opportunity to be a part of a truly historic project.

  • From buying historic homes to creating passive second streams of income by writing about their passions, AWAI members are certainly using their copywriting skills in unique ways.

Judith Shaw decided to follow her passion for creativity as an artist by developing a website, www.CreativityBeat.com. She used Nick Usborne’s How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites program to overcome her lack of technical skills.

“Nick’s program is easy to follow and presents a steady, realistic approach to writing your information website,” she says. “He offers lots of advice and resources to help non-technical people like me. The research I’m doing for my site is also improving my skills as an artist and art teacher.”

  • Do you have a dog? If so, you’ll want to check out Jennifer Phillips April’s new site, www.All-Natural-Dog-Treat.com. Jennifer, too, used Nick’s program to turn her hobby into a serious passive income. (She gets 800-1,200 visitors a day!) She combined her love of dogs, baking, and nutrition to create a great site based on recipes for healthy dog treats. As she says, “Nick’s hands-on detailed explanations simplify creating a website that gets traffic and converts visitors.”

What’s your passion? Join Jennifer, Judith and the other successful money-making website owners on the money-making website member forum. Along with a 7-week training program with Nick, you’ll get access free … simply by purchasing How to Write Money-Making Websites by tomorrow at midnight.

  • AWAI’s cornerstone product, re-visited. AWAI Member Kammy Thurman wrote to me this week: “Just going through the online version of the Accelerated Program and wanted to tell you how awesome it is. The re-design, interactivity, and podcasts are really fun!”

If you’re like a lot of copywriters I know, you keep your Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting right on your desk and refer to it often. The online version makes it even easier to find what you’re looking for. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a surprise. The search function, audio and video messages, and links to related content help the lessons sink in faster and bring the program to life in a way that the paper version just can’t. To get access to it, call the ladies in Member Services at 866-879-2924.

  • Ebook sales skyrocketed 176.6% over the previous year, according to a recent article in The New York Times. Ebooks currently make up only 1.3% of all book sales, but the introduction of the Nook from Barnes & Noble and the iPad from Apple is expected to bolster sales further in 2010.

What does this mean for you? To promote their ebooks, authors generally need a well-written email sales letter, as well as the landing page that the reader is directed to. Once you have a few of these in your portfolio, you could market yourself as an ebook promotion specialist. AWAI member Steve Roller told me that he recently wrote email sales letters and landing pages for two different clients. One was an ebook on functional anatomy for dancers (mostly women), the other was on prostate cancer (obviously, for men). Said Steve, “There seems to be a lot of work out there writing for ebook authors, in any niche.”

  • Where do you find these projects? If you have a website or blog, include ebook promotion as one of your services. Another great source is AWAI’s DirectResponseJobs.com – which lists all kinds of copywriting projects.

A recent listing (with an application deadline of April 30): “SEO Consultant (a Freelance Internet Copywriting job). Successful ebook publisher seeks experienced SEO/organic search manager with proven track record …”

  • Need extra income to bridge the gap until you’re fully living the writer’s life? AWAI member Lynn Wiley did. And she got that income quickly.

In Tuesday’s The Writer Life, she shared a “quick fix” she tried that has turned into a meaningful and rewarding interim career for her.

  • The millionaire “common thread.” Thomas Stanley’s book The Millionaire Mind has nothing to do with copywriting or marketing, but it reinforces some of the ideas we promote here at AWAI.

Stanley, a college professor, studied the traits that very wealthy people have in common. Interestingly, he did not find any correlation between advanced degrees (JDs, MDs, PhDs, or even MBAs) and accumulating wealth. In fact, few of millionaires Stanley studied were ever considered to be “intellectually gifted.” They had an average undergraduate GPA of 2.92 on a 4.00-point scale.

So what was the biggest connection between those millionaires? 86% of them believed that loving their work was very significant in accounting for their millionaire status. They also believed it was risky not to be self-employed.

    Three take-aways from Stanley’s research:

    1. Don’t let your lack of a Harvard MBA or other academic credentials hold you back. Most millionaires don’t have them either.
    2. In this economy (and in any economy), being self-employed may be your least risky route to financial freedom.
    3. Finally, do something you love.
  • With the baseball season in full swing (sorry … couldn’t resist that bad pun!), I ran across this quote by the famous pitcher Satchell Paige: “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you was?”

Paige got a late start because he wasn’t allowed to play in the major leagues until after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. He reportedly pitched well into his 50s.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m too old for that” or “I wish I had started sooner,” just remember the writer’s life doesn’t have an age limit.

Just ask our own Shelby Beckett. A recent addition to AWAI’s Wall of Fame, Shelby didn’t start copywriting until she was 71. And, as you’ll notice on the Wall of Fame, Shelby’s in great company with other AWAI members who have found copywriting later in life.

So … wherever you are in life, there you are. Start there!

As Executive Director of AWAI, Katie Yeakle has been helping people live the writer’s life since 1997.

“AWAI is built on a big promise … that we can teach you a new skill that can lead to increased income … independence from the 9-to-5 grind … and the freedom to live and work where you choose.

“All of us at AWAI stand behind that promise. In fact, that’s how we measure our success – by how many people we help reinvent their lives.

“Follow our proven advice, and you can be among the many successes we’re so proud of.”
