Rebecca Matter

Hey there,

Rebecca Matter here.

I’m so glad you could join me today — because the topic we’re discussing is so critical…

And universal…

Every writer needs to hear about this.

No matter what niche you write for — or want to write for…

Whether you’re already a professional writer… or are just getting started…

There’s one fundamental thing you need to understand in order to be successful…

Something that’s practically taken over the writing world…

Completely flipped the script on how your clients do business…

And is STILL growing!

In fact, based on current growth, experts at Nasdaq are predicting that by 2040 more than 95% of ALL purchases will depend on this…

And according to Forbes, there’s zero doubt:

Thanks to this, “… the consumer landscape will never be the same again.”

If you’ve been tuning in lately, you might have guessed:

I’m talking about “The Leap” — where digital commerce and online marketing have achieved 10 years-worth of growth in just three months!

So what does all this mean?

Well, for businesses it means they have to adapt — and fast — or else be left behind.

And for writers like you… it means a massive opportunity.

One that’s insulated from any “ups and downs” that other markets regularly struggle with…

And can provide you with a steady, dependable writing income — for LIFE.

Which is why right now, EVERY writer should be pivoting into digital copy and content writing.

But you don’t have to take my word for it.

Today I have a special guest joining me…

A man who’s not only built his own “writing empire” by putting down roots in the digital copywrtiting market …

But has also poured his 40+ years of experience into helping thousands of writers like you do the same.

And today, he’s going to show you exactly how to harness this “universal” writing skill to create your own easy…

Fun…

Recession-proof writing income…

Starting right here — right now.

But first, really quick, let me just check to make sure my alerts are off here…

Because I bet you…

Gosh, yeah — look at this [holds up cell phone] just in the few minutes I’ve been talking to you, I have 6 new emails…

Oh! And it looks like Amazon is offering the headsets my kids use at school at a discount…

Ha! Here comes another notification — this one’s from Facebook…

But see — here, I’ll turn this off first — the thing is…

I’m totally happy to see those alerts and emails and ads…

Not only because, as a consumer, they’re giving me information I’ve been looking for…

Pointing me towards answers and solutions I’ve googled…

Keeping me updated on topics I’ve subscribed to…

Or reminding me about products I’ve been thinking about buying…

But also because, like I said earlier …

Thanks to my position in the writing industry, I happen to know that every one of those emails and ads …

Every web page and blog post update…

Even the social media alerts…

They’re all indicators of one major thing:

The digital marketing world is BOOMING.

Now more than ever, companies are getting the word out about their business online

And at a scale we’ve never seen before in history.

We’ve reached the tipping point where it’s no longer an option for businesses to have an online presence…

With buying trends heading the way of 95% of ALL SALES happening online in the future…

A bar graph trending upward with an upward arrow

Businesses are waking up and realizing that their customers are not coming to their doors anymore…

They’re not making decisions based on what some billboard tells them…

They’re going online.

They’re getting information from articles and blog posts and product reviews…

They’re checking out what people are saying about certain brands on social media…

They’re asking Google for the best solution to their problem…

To the point where any business that DOESN’T have an active presence online is not just leaving money on the table…

They’re going under entirely.

No website?

Poof — they’re obsolete.

Having that online content and communication is no longer something that’s “nice to have”…

It’s absolutely critical for their survival.

And it doesn’t matter whether they’re big or small — giant corporations and little mom-and-pop shops all over the world are waking up each and every day and realizing:

They NEED to get more and more content online…

Which means they desperately need writers!

Writers like YOU.

We’re at the point today where over 75% of businesses have openly admitted they are struggling to find writers who can help them fill their growing demands for online copy and content.

And that demand means big benefits for you as a writer.

In just a second, I’ll be introducing you to one of the premier copywriters for the digital marketing world…

He’s going to give you a much deeper insight into the crazy scale of this opportunity…

Including a serious look behind the curtain at how recent events have brought us to a major “tipping point”…

And essentially transformed digital copywriting into THE universal writing industry of the world.

I can’t stress enough how big this is…

And more importantly…

What an exciting opportunity it creates for you as a writer.

Because, during this interview, our expert has also promised to give you a guided tour of what it means to be a digital copywriter in today’s world.

He’ll show you exactly which skills are a MUST for you to stand out…

What your daily work flow might consist of…

Who your clients could be… and exactly how to connect with the best ones so you only need one or two to have a full schedule, making great money as a writer.

Plus, he’ll give you an inside look at the different types of projects you can pick and choose from as a digital copywriter…

How much you can expect to earn for them…

What it’s like to write each one…

And how to choose which ones are a good fit for you.

Let me just say — that last thing is something I personally LOVE to talk to writers about…

Because when it comes to digital copywriting, there truly is a perfect fit for EVERY writer.

Like — let’s say you only have a few hours a week to write…

No problem! Off the top of my head, I can think of 6 or 7 projects that you can easily knock out in just an hour or two.

And those short projects are especially easy to master — even for total beginners.

I know so many writers who got their start writing “part-time” digital copywriting pieces.

Or, say you’re looking for a full-time writing income, but you need predictability… you need to feel secure that you’ll make enough money month after month.

There are plenty of digital copywriting projects that put you in a perfect position to secure what we call “retainer fees.”

Meaning the clients you choose to work with give you a steady flow of writing projects that repeat each month… in exchange for a paycheck that repeats each month.

Retainer contracts like this can easily earn a digital copywriter $5,000 or more in writing fees every month… from a single client.

I’m totally just scratching the surface here…

Because as a digital copywriter, you’ll be able to custom-design your own version of your “perfect” writer’s life

Where you can literally write about ANY topic you want…

Spending as much or as little time on your writing…

All while knowing:

You’re tapped into THE universal writing industry of the world…

Where your options… and the demand for your skills… are virtually unlimited.

Which is why I’m so excited to introduce our special guest expert today…

His writing career has spanned over 40 years…

And for more than 20 years of that time he’s been dedicated exclusively to digital copywriting…

So to say he’s got roots here is a total understatement. The truth is… he’s pretty much a legend in the business.

He’s written for dozens of major big-league companies like Franklin Mint… TV Guide… Apple… Chrysler… Citibank… MSN… Wells Fargo Bank… the U.S. Navy… The New York TimesEncyclopedia Britannica… Intuit… Disney…

And that’s not even to mention the countless small and medium-sized businesses he’s helped throughout the years…

Plus, he’s won no less than 15 writing awards in his field both in Europe and North America!

But around AWAI, he’s a “big deal” for a whole different reason…

Around here, our members recognize his name and light up with excitement…

Because the man I’m about to introduce you to is one of the most brilliant and generous writing teachers and mentors I’ve ever met…

He’s gone above and beyond in helping thousands of new writers launch their very own writing careers…

And the insights he’s agreed to share with you today have the power to completely change not only your writing career… but your LIFE.

So without any further ado…

I’d like to introduce our special guest — master digital copywriter and educator, Nick Usborne.

Welcome Nick!

Nick Usborne

Thank you Rebecca for that generous introduction. I’m really happy to be here.

Rebecca Matter

I’m so glad you agreed to join us for this as well because — as I mentioned earlier, this is a BIG moment in writing history…

And you know better than anyone just how much of an impact it’s going to have on our viewers…

Nick Usborne

Oh absolutely. There’s never been a better — or more necessary — time for writers to get into the digital market.

And you’ve touched on “why” with the stats you shared…

But I want to just clarify something — I think a lot of people still probably don’t realize just how BIG a deal this is.

You look at where the internet is right now — it’s become an essential part of our daily lives…

It’s how we connect and communicate with friends and family…

It’s how we find our way when we’re driving.

How we choose what to eat for dinner… or which color cushions to buy… you name it.

It’s where we go for entertainment… everything is streaming!

The “online world” is expanding at such a rate that it’s becoming nearly impossible to exist without it!

Which means…

For almost any type of business… every company out there or any type of writing you can think of…

Digital marketing is at the center of everything.

It’s the universal key to success.

Rebecca Matter

And the demand for digital copywriting is WAY outpacing how fast we can train new writers…

Nick Usborne

It definitely is. In all my years in the writing business, I’ve never seen anything quite like this.

In fact, you may have noticed I’m just a teeny bit older than you, Rebecca…

And believe it or not, when I got started… this whole “internet thing” was just a wild and crazy new trend — what, back in 1995? — that most people didn’t understand… didn’t think would stick…

But over the past 20 years or so…

As people began to realize just how great a tool the internet could be…

And how powerful it was for connecting businesses with consumers, and consumers with product solutions…

Digital marketing became “the big thing” — after being this weird new thing.

And as you can easily see when you look at the world today — businesses in the know have been going digital for years now.

So even before we hit this recent tipping point…

Which I’ll address a bit more in just a second…

The truth is demand for digital copywriters was already HUGE

Because as businesses realized they needed to create a website… start communicating with their audiences online…

They all quickly found out:

It takes a LOT of writing to stay relevant online!

Rebecca Matter

That’s right — your average business needs to have a website…

Needs an email newsletter that goes out every few days…

They have articles to educate their audience about their products…

Maybe a blog with new posts every week…

Not to mention ads and sales letters and video scripts and emails…

Nick Usborne

Exactly — the list just goes on and on!

So when it comes to digital copywriting that’s the very first and most important thing writers need to understand:

This is not just a “one and done” kind of thing.

Every single client you encounter, no matter what type of business they have…

Every one of them winds up needing this ever-growing list of digital writing projects…

So not only do they need writers right now…

They need writers every month… every year… for the lifetime of their business!

Rebecca Matter

That’s a great point Nick, and one I definitely want to make sure to underline.

Because when you become a digital copywriter… you’re basically putting yourself in this perfect position…

Where you can pick and choose your projects… the topics you write about… the clients you work for…

And once you hit that “sweet spot” — once you hone in on the perfect digital copywriting gig for you…

You can lock it in for as long as you want!

Because the demand for that project is never going away — it’s not going to “fill up” — it’s going to keep growing!

So there’s no “feast or famine”…

No hunting for clients…

For as long as you’re a digital copywriter… you’re practically guaranteed to have as much work as you could ask for.

Nick Usborne

For instance, I know quite a few writers who only work for a small handful of regular clients… and for years they’ve been making a very, very comfortable income just by doing one thing very well…

Or just look at me — I’ve had clients who booked me out for months in advance because they just had SO much they needed…

And that’s a great position to be in as a writer because you never have to worry about where your next paycheck is coming from.

Rebecca Matter

I wish I could broadcast this message to every aspiring writer out there…

Because that’s one of the biggest concerns I hear over and over from writers who are just getting started:

They love writing and they want so badly to start making a living with it, but they just don’t know if they’ll be able to depend on the income.

This is your answer.

You CAN earn a great income writing. And this is how you do it.

Nick Usborne

And I’d even take it a step further Rebecca.

Like I said, I’ve been writing for decades now…

And in that time, the world has seen a lot of ups and downs… the dot-com bubble… stock market and real estate crashes… and of course COVID…

But through it all, thanks to digital copywriting, I have always been able to provide a very healthy, dependable income for my family.

I don’t say that to brag…

But it is a big deal — especially because when you’re a writer…

People have weird ideas about writers… they assume that “oh, it’s another penniless writer” — that whole stereotype…

But in reality, digital copywriting is by far one of the most lucrative… and dependable ways to make a living as a writer.

Rebecca Matter

Speaking of… I think now would be a good time to address the elephant in the room…

Because we all know — there’s been a LOT of craziness and hardship in the world recently…

I don’t want to dwell on it too much and be a Debbie Downer, but can you take a minute and share with us:

How have recent events impacted digital copywriting?

Nick Usborne

Absolutely Rebecca, and I’m glad you asked. Because there has been a lot of turmoil lately…

Quarantine… people losing jobs… companies going under… a lot of uncertainty…

Which is why I’ve never felt more fortunate..

Because not only has the demand for digital copywriters stayed strong through everything…

It’s actually thriving.

Rebecca Matter

I’m hearing the same thing from a lot of writers… and to me that makes sense — because more businesses than ever are depending on their digital marketing and their online presence to reach customers these days.

Nick Usborne

Absolutely — It’s the ultimate way to insulate yourself and your business from outside chaos:

The more your business is online, the fewer “outside factors” can touch you.

Online it doesn’t matter where you’re located…

Where your customers are located…

Being 100% online gives you the power to connect with prospects and clients all over the world… from wherever you are.

Rebecca Matter

Which has never been more important than it is right now.

Nick Usborne

Even companies that thought they’d never need a website are realizing…

They just can’t survive without one anymore.

For example… my wife and I shop at a local outdoor market and always go to the same fruit and veg stall. These guys never had a website… until COVID shut down the market.

Now we still buy our fruit and veg from them… but from their new website.

It’s what’s keeping them afloat. Companies that never had — never needed — a website before are going online.

A whole new opportunity.

But here’s the thing…

The quarantine may have accelerated the process by forcing people’s hand…

But I’ve been watching the evolution and growth of digital marketing since the beginning…

And I can tell you with absolute certainty — we were heading this way no matter what.

And it’s all because of how consumers use the internet.

Just think about it — what’s the first thing you do when you need something?

Like, Rebecca, if you walked into your kitchen right now and discovered your oven was broken and you needed a new one… what would you do first?

Rebecca Matter

I’d probably pull out my phone and google “best ovens” to start…

Nick Usborne

Okay wait — I’m going to stop you there because you’ve already hit on the first big point, which is:

Search engines are the key to everything these days.

I’ve actually got some… yes I pulled out some stats here for you:

According to one recent study — more than 81% of people will do some type of online research with a search engine, like Google, before they make a big purchase, like an oven.

So for every 10 people out there, whenever they run into a bit of a problem the very first thing 8 of them do is — like you — go straight to the internet to find their solution.

What does that tell you right off the bat?

Rebecca Matter

If I’m a company trying to sell a product, I’d better make sure I show up on the search engines when people are looking for my stuff!

Nick Usborne

Right? So you’ve got to have a website… you’ve got to turn on the search engines. But that’s where it gets tricky for businesses…

Because — here’s one more little nugget for you:

75% of people say the NEVER scroll past the first page of Google results!

A meme that says the best place to hide a dead body is page 2 of the Google search results

So you do your search, and you probably got hundreds of thousands of pages…

But hardly any of us, you know, we hardly ever go past page one.

Rebecca Matter

So if your business isn’t showing up on the first page of your customer’s search results — you’re out of luck!

Nick Usborne

Pretty much! Although, to be fair, you can still get a fair amount of traffic from page two. Not quite dead! But you absolutely want to be on page one.

This is why there’s a whole branch of digital copywriting called Search Engine Optimization (SEO) writing that specializes in helping companies make sure they show up at the top of those Google results.

Rebecca Matter

And SEO is a huge opportunity for writers right now…

Nick Usborne

Absolutely. With SEO, it’s all about knowing which keywords and phrases people are using when searching for things…

And knowing just how to use those words on your client’s web pages…

So when someone is searching on Google, your client’s website pops up… and hopefully on page one!

Rebecca Matter

But there’s more to SEO copywriting than just pulling keywords out of thin air, right?

Nick Usborne

For sure. And that’s what makes this such a powerful opportunity.

There’s a learning curve with SEO. It’s not easy-peasy. 🙂

Rebecca Matter

And that’s a good thing… that it’s not easy?

Nick Usborne

Absolutely! If it was too easy, your client could do it, or just ask a junior employee to do it.

The secret here is that the learning curve with SEO is steep enough… but not too steep.

Clients don’t have the time or interest in learning it. Their employees have no clue.

And that’s why they turn to writers like us.

And here’s the thing… the learning curve isn’t THAT steep. I’ve watched hundreds of aspiring copywriters learn this stuff.

Rebecca Matter

Which is in essence why SEO copywriters get paid so much! Because they have a skill that is a mystery to their clients!

Nick Usborne

Exactly. Which is why writers who have SEO skills to offer their clients can charge upwards of $400 for every web page they optimize…

And to clarify — that’s not even to write the web page. That’s just for looking at a web page that already exists and adding a little “optimization magic”!

Rebecca Matter

So… If you’re already writing a web page for a client… or if you’re looking at one that’s already been written ahead of time… you can optimize it for the search engines pretty quickly. It’s not like you have to recreate the whole page.

Nick Usborne

Yes. In fact, for some web pages it’s as simple as replacing a couple of words in the first few sentences… or writing a new headline.

Other times, you’ll need to do some more keyword research and dig a little deeper to do a good job.

Remember… if this was TOO easy… you wouldn’t be able to charge a nice fat fee for it.

So… that’s one big writing opportunity that is ballooning with this modern surge of digital marketing…

And I could go on more about SEO…

But I don’t want to go too far down the rabbit hole on just one opportunity yet, because there are SO many more things I want to cover today…

For now, let’s finish walking through this stove shopping process — I don’t want your kids to go hungry tonight!

Rebecca Matter

Ha ha! Are you saying pizza isn’t an option?

Nick Usborne

Sure… but even if you decide to order pizza, where are you going to get it from?

Rebecca Matter

You’re totally right — I’d probably google “pizza delivery near me”! The options around here are always changing as places open and close.

Nick Usborne

Exactly! Or even, let’s reverse the scenario…

What if you were driving down the road and saw a new pizza place near your house — let’s say it’s called “Tony’s Pizza” — and you think, “Huh, they must be new, let’s give this Tony’s place a try tonight”…

Now you get home, open your laptop, and search for “Tony’s Pizza”…

What do you do if they’re not online?

No website… no online menu or delivery options… what then?

Rebecca Matter

I unfortunately have to say I wouldn’t order from them.

First of all, if I can’t find their info online, how do I call them for delivery or take out?

Another thing — if I don’t know them, how do I know if they’re any good if I can’t read customer reviews.

Don’t get me wrong, if it’s a new place I might give them the benefit of the doubt and think they maybe just aren’t open yet…

But even then, they’ve lost my business because now I’m assuming they aren’t open.

Nick Usborne

So without that website, poor Tony’s is losing major business.

Which brings us right back around to our oven example.

Because if something as simple and small as buying a pizza already depends so much on being able to find information online… then you can imagine how much more important it is when you’re looking at a purchase like a stove, right?

I mean, it’s not just a few dollars.

Rebecca Matter

That’s for sure. If I’m going to sink a couple thousand dollars into a purchase, you’d better believe I’m going to be researching the heck out of it to make sure I get the right one…

And that I’m not over-paying for something.

Nick Usborne

Right. So far we’ve done a google search for the best ovens…

Here’s an example of our results…

A search engine results page for the query 'best ovens'

So you can see here we have a page listed that ranks some of the best options…

What’s the next thing you’re going to do?

Rebecca Matter

Well, I’ll probably read a bunch of these lists and articles about the best performing ovens in my price range.

Nick Usborne

There you go! Another big-hitter for writers: digital content writing.

So content — editorial writing — is like the meat and potatoes of digital marketing.

This includes your blog posts, articles, white papers, infographics… the list goes on and on for that one…

This is all just useful information for you while you’re looking for a new stove…

Let’s look at this first article, for example…

An article detailing information about the best ranges and stoves

Let’s see…

Okay… so it’s partly a “listicle”… which is just a clever term for the article that’s set up as a list of things, right? Like 1 thru 5…

But also… here you’ve got some introductory information that’s meant to educate the reader on what they should be looking for when they’re choosing an oven.

Really helpful to you, right?

This is huge:

Because as a writer, one of your biggest opportunities in digital marketing is going to be creating content like this.

Why?

Because by giving the reader these insights — this free information — you’re building trust with them.

You’re giving them the information they need to make a smart decision…

You’re helping them to feel comfortable, confident in their choice…

So companies WANT you to write pages that give out free info and tips and how-to’s… because they know the reader is going to come for the free information…

And then down below that free information that just helped them out is…

Oh, look here — a list of products with descriptions and reviews…

This is information that will now help the reader make a buying decision.

Rebecca Matter

This is super valuable to me as a buyer, because I don’t feel like I’m in the dark — I’m not just guessing which oven will make me happy.

Nick Usborne

Now imagine how things were pre-internet. Before the Web — before that handy little phone in your pocket. Imagine if you had to buy an oven just because it was the only one your local store sold?

Or because some traveling salesman came to your door and convinced you on one?

Rebecca Matter

Ugh, I can’t even imagine!

How could you ever be sure you picked the right one? Or that you didn’t get swindled paying for something over-priced or poor quality?

If you couldn’t do that research.

Nick Usborne

That’s exactly why shopping online… digital marketing… it’s here to stay. And growing fast.

Because we like it. We love it. And we never want to see it disappear.

No one wants to go back to “guessing” which product is the best choice for them…

They want to KNOW. They want the facts… they want the reviews… they want to compare all the options online before they make a decision.

And to give the customer what they want, businesses need digital content!

Rebecca Matter

That’s a great point, Nick.

And it’s also why the demand for this kind of digital content writing… spans EVERY possible topic you can imagine!

Like this guy is writing about ovens…

But you can find similar articles about gardening… cooking… dog training… parenting… perfecting your golf swing… you name it!

I think one of the things I love most about writing digital content is that you really can write about any topic that interests you.

Literally!

Anything you’re interested in, you can make a living writing about it as a digital copywriter, right?

Nick Usborne

Definitely — I’ve written about everything from television shows to computers to coffee beans! Just a huge, huge list.

Actually, a great example of that is writing blog posts.

Now, blogging is one of the most fun and flexible types of content writing you can get into. Especially as a beginner…

Partly because they’re usually fairly short — just a couple of pages long for most of them…

And they tend to be on fun, light topics that people like to read about — kind of informative and entertaining — exactly like you were just saying, Rebecca.

For instance…

Since we’re looking at ovens here… let me see…

Okay, let’s look at this company’s website — Williams Sonoma.

Williams Sonoma website
Rebecca Matter

Love them!

Nick Usborne

Do you? Ha.

Rebecca Matter

Oh, yeah.

Nick Usborne

This is one of those big-name fancy kitchen stores that has a bit of everything…

And you can see here immediately from their website they’ve got lots of different products…

Rebecca Matter

Including some very expensive fancy ovens!

Nick Usborne

Don’t worry, Rebecca, I’m not here to break your bank!

What I wanted to show you here is their blog:

Williams Sonoma blog

Now look at these recent blog posts…

We’ve got recipes… how to grill perfect pork chops…

Slow cooker vs. Dutch ovens…

How to prep skinny meals for the whole week…

Now keep in mind, behind every one of these blog posts is a writer…

And by the way, you’re looking at earning around $300-$500 for every blog post like this you write…

So someone in the world got paid to sit at their laptop and spend an hour writing two pages on the best way to make homemade French crepes…

And it could have been YOU!

Talk about a dream workday…

You wake up… pour yourself a cup of coffee (or in my case, two or three)… sit down at the kitchen table and write two or three blog posts about gooey caramel and flakey pastries…

Then send your finished blog posts off in an email and make yourself a late breakfast… knowing you just cashed a $1,500 check just by writing!

Rebecca Matter

Oh my gosh, yes — sign me up!

Nick Usborne

Let me clarify one thing though… I’d actually recommend you wait a few hours BEFORE you send in your work.

This is just an extra copywriter’s tip, right?

Even for easy things like this — even when you can write it quickly…

When you finish, just hold on to it for a few hours at least and then go back.

This gives you time to go back and read it again, and see if there are any improvements you can make.

Anyway…

Okay — anyway, there’s a big reason why writing for blogs is such a favorite among digital copywriters!

You can see here, these blog posts are short…

Seriously, after doing a little research first, anyone could write these — they’re very simple and fun to do…

But what you probably DON’T realize is that these entertaining and informative little blog posts actually serve a very important purpose for the business…

Rebecca Matter

Oh true. They’re not publishing this blog just for fun…

Nick Usborne

Nope. What a blog like this does is bring in readers…

This is called the “acquisition” stage of the buying process or buying cycle.

You come in looking for an apple tart recipe…

You have a really enjoyable experience looking at the pretty pictures and reading the descriptions of the food…

You learn a thing or two about cooking techniques…

You find a recipe that sounds O.M.G. so amazing — and you want to run off to the kitchen to cook it up…

So that’s the experience you’re having with that blog post…

But in the meantime, you also want it to come out as perfectly as the one in the blog post…

So maybe you should buy the exact ceramic pie dish they used…

And while you’re there, those spatulas look so much nicer than the crummy plastic ones — why is it we all have such old spatulas? — you’ve been scraping your pans with for seven years now…

You see where I’m going with this?

Rebecca Matter

Absolutely. The blog brings in a reader and ultimately helps convert them into a buyer.

Nick Usborne

Exactly!

Rebecca Matter

That’s why content like blog posts is so valuable to companies.

Nick Usborne

And when you understand the value that your writing has to the overall business your client is running, THAT’S when you start to really understand why you’re so valuable as a digital copywriter…

And why they’re so happy to pay you top-tier fees for your writing.

Just take a look at some of the other projects you could be getting paid for:

To write a standard website homepage — that’s the first page you get to — you’re looking at a huge range, anywhere from $450 to $4,500…

For a subscription page where you’re convincing a reader to sign up for more info? Again — anywhere from $450 to $4,500…

It basically depends on how big your client is and how much value they can reasonably expect to get in return for those web pages…

But even at the lower end, that’s a pretty nice wage.

So… a big company that earns millions by sending dedicated emails and newsletters to their subscribers? The math just makes sense. They’re going to be HAPPY to drop a few thousand dollars on a fresh subscription page… the email signup page.

You see what I mean?

Rebecca Matter

Absolutely

Nick Usborne

And speaking of — you could also be the one writing those emails!

You could be making $250 per email… or even a solid $3,000 a month or more if you’re writing a bunch of them regularly…

And that’s still only the beginning…

There’re also video scripts… case studies… e-books… news items… we’ve got a whole list here we’ll put up — you can see…

We’ve got 15… 20… just so many different types of writing you can do as a digital copywriter…

And one of the things I love about that is it means that whatever kind of writer you are, there are writing opportunities that will perfectly match you.

Plus, any single client you start writing for needs these things written — which is why I always encourage digital copywriters to have a how-to guide handy for all these projects…

Even if you start out specializing in one or two…

Just imagine if your dream client came up to you and said:

“Rebecca, we just love the web page you’ve written for us so much… would you also consider writing our new product catalog… helping us out with four or five case studies we’re behind on… and maybe writing some insert ads to help boost sales?”

What a great opportunity! When a client comes to you and says would you like some more work?!

In that scenario, you just turned what was already probably a 4 or $5,000 paycheck into a stream of writing income…

I’d estimate another $1,500 for the product catalog…

Probably anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000 for every case study you write…

And then a bunch of “quick wins” — heck — you can knock out 5-10 ads in an afternoon if you put your mind to it!

And that’s another $1,000…

So from this one client you’ve already got writing fees piling up well over the $10K mark!

Rebecca Matter

And as a client, I know — this is how it works.

I hire dozens of writers. And it is: you wrote this, now can you write this out? Can you write this out? Can you write this?

And just looking at that example — it’s no wonder you can easily make a full-time writing income with just one or two clients!

Nick Usborne

It’s easy to when you’re earning hundreds… even thousands of dollars for a writing project that only takes you a few hours to complete!

Which basically means your day-to-day work schedule can look however you want it to.

Personally, I like to write in the morning…

And then, after lunch, I’ll take some time off to go walking, cycling, or kayaking in the river.

But that’s the great thing about digital copywriting — your client isn’t paying you for punching a clock. They’re paying you to create the content that’s going to bring their online presence to life.

Every piece of content you write is like a building block for their business.

Every article that grabs a reader’s attention… every blog post that brings someone new to their website…

Without your words — they don’t have customers.

Rebecca Matter

I just want to pause there for a second and — everyone listening I want you to take that in…

It’s so empowering when you realize just how important your writing is to your clients.

And Nick, in the program you created for AWAI, you put a lot of emphasis on making sure our writers understand the big picture of how valuable and impactful their writing can be. Right?

Nick Usborne

Definitely. My goal with that program was not only for it to be the ONLY comprehensive how-to guide a digital copywriter would ever need…

I also wanted it to equip writers with the confidence and big-picture mindset that would distinguish them as a professional in the field.

I typically explain it like — it’s sort of the different between being and architect and being a laborer…

Yes, you’ve heard this, Rebecca, I’ve said this before…

If all you know how to do is lay bricks, well then you’re going to get a brick-layer’s wages and be limited to brick-laying jobs…

Slide graph comparing income of a brick-layer vs an architect

But when you’re the architect… then you understand the big picture of what you’re building… you know how every brick fits together to make the functioning whole…

You know what the plumber has to do too… and the roofer, and the painter… and so on. You see how everything works together.

As the “architect”… you become more than just a copywriter. You become a trusted advisor and consultant to your client.

It makes you the hero of their business!

And that’s why you get paid the big bucks.

As a digital copywriter, you COULD choose to just learn how to do one thing…

But I wanted to give writers the means to understand the big picture of what their words are building…

To have access to ALL the different writing projects they might ever want to write…

To know what purpose each one served and how to make their work stand out from the crowd… which is a big deal — you want to separate yourself…

And in doing so, to empower them to rise straight to the top as superstar digital copywriters.

Rebecca Matter

Well, you definitely succeeded at that.

Not only does your digital copywriting program cover step-by-step exactly how to write ALL of the projects your clients might ask for…

Essentially giving writers the key to open ANY door in the digital writing world… and to be able to say YES no matter what their clients ask for.

To date, your program has already helped launch thousands of new writing careers because of this “big picture” approach.

And I've repeated it and given you credit for years. I've known Nick for over a decade now. So I've learned this from him.

In fact, another copywriting expert, Bob Bly, even called your program “The ‘Bible’ of Digital Copywriting”

“The ‘Bible’ of Digital Copywriting”

“Few copywriters are as experienced in web copy as my friend Nick Usborne, and certainly no one teaches how to write for business websites better. You should study Nick’s AWAI Digital Copywriting program as if it were the ‘Bible’ of website copywriting… which it is.”

— Bob Bly,
“The Copywriter’s Copywriter”
and AWAI Copywriter of the Year

But the big news of the day is that you actually just completely updated the program to make it even better than before!

Nick Usborne

That’s right. As the demand for digital copywriting grows, the program has grown with it.

Hey, this is a fast-changing world. So the program has to change as well.

For instance, part of the new expanded edition is a whole section on digital copywriting for social media — which is another great opportunity that’s especially perfect for brand-new writers who might not feel ready to take on bigger projects.

Rebecca Matter

That’s true, because when you’re writing for social media posts, they’re very limited on size, right?

Nick Usborne

Exactly. You might find yourself writing a 300-word Facebook Ad…

Or a 15-word tweet for Twitter…

We’re talking teeny-tiny copy here.

But the beauty of social media writing is that — not only are the pieces you write super short and easy…

There’s also a TON of them! Your client might need anywhere from 5 to 50 different social media posts a day…

Which is why a lot of social media writers wind up landing lucrative retainer deals as well… anywhere from $2,000-$5,000 a month for a single client.

Rebecca Matter

So even though the individual pieces are small and easy… the overall payout is just as big!

Nick Usborne

And it’s a fantastic way to get your foot in the door as a new writer.

Smaller bite-sized projects like this are a low-pressure way for beginners to get used to the professional writing scene…

To get on good terms with new clients…

And to start making some serious cash flow right out the gate.

Which is why I made sure to put extra focus on it in the new, updated program.

Rebecca Matter

Social media writing… SEO… Articles and blog posts… all of these are such MAJOR opportunities for writers in the digital space…

But we’ve really only just scratched the surface here…

Because in your program — The Digital Copywriter’s Handbook — you show writers in detail how to write ALL of the major digital writing projects…

That’s more than 15 different writing opportunities they can tap into.

Nick Usborne

That’s right — some of the ones we haven’t even covered yet are big ones too…

Like writing a client’s email newsletter.

This is one of my favorites.

The e-newsletter is a critical touchpoint for your client’s business…

It’s one of the biggest ways for them to stay in front of their customers… to stay relevant… to build on that relationship and keep their buyers coming back for more.

And it does all that by keeping readers informed about what’s going on with the company that’s new and exciting…

Letting them know about special deals and new product releases…

And sharing a lot of free information that the reader is already interested in.

So while your reader is going about her daily life she’s thinking about a thousand different things, right?

But in the moment your e-newsletter shows up in her inbox… for that moment YOU have her attention…

And you remind her that — “Oh right, I did want to look more into so-and-so…”

Or — “Oh, I didn’t know this interesting fact about growing tomatoes… maybe I should look into getting some different fertilizer…”

Or — “Oh, that product I’ve been thinking about buying just went on sale! Perfect timing!”

Rebecca Matter

Right, the e-newsletter is the perfect communication channel between companies and their customers… because the customer asked specifically for more information…

They want to be getting these updates and this content!

And by giving them that regular reminder in their inbox, your client makes sure they KEEP their attention…

Which is critical for turning one-time buyers into lifelong customers.

Nick Usborne

And I love how you said that — because the readers did ASK for this info — they WANT to receive it…

And lifelong customers are WAY more valuable to your client than a one-time buyer…

They’re the real lifeblood of your client’s business.

So your client will happily pay premium writing fees for a solid e-newsletter that keeps their audience super engaged and active.

Rebecca Matter

How much are we talking?

Nick Usborne

Hey, it depends… if you’re just writing a single piece for them you’re probably looking at $250-$500… just for one issue of the newsletter which is like writing one long email from the writer’s perspective…

But it’s far more likely that you’ll wind up with a steady contract month over month where they’re paying you upwards of $2,000 to write the e-newsletter.

And that’s another source of writing income you can depend on for a long time too…

In fact, the single most profitable gig of my entire career was writing e-newsletters for one client over a period of about five years.

Rebecca Matter

WOW!

And we’re running out of time here, but we still haven’t even talked about email sales campaigns… landing pages… web pages… ads… so much!

Nick Usborne

I know — that’s the thing about being a digital copywriter…

There are just SO many options you have…

But this is a good thing — it’s a good thing we’re running out of time because there’s just so much opportunity…

So many different types of projects to choose from…

Like me, I love to write a little bit of everything, so I typically will sign on with a client and just write everything across the board for them for a while…

So I might start by writing the homepage and “About Us” page for their website…

For that, I’d usually charge around $3,500…

I mean, one client I even charged $15,000 for a homepage — it was a BIG, big client…

Then I might also write a sales campaigns for them, which might consist of…

A promotional landing page — $1,000…

An email campaign — maybe 5-10 promotional emails total — $1,500…

Several ads for different channels — $800…

And an updated product catalog — $750…

So I’m trying to add this up… I don’t know where are we at, like…

So just from this one client I’m already at the $7,550 mark in writing fees! It adds up fast!

And to be honest, at this stage in my career, I charge a lot more than that. But these are solid starting prices for a professional trained digital copywriter.

Even as a beginner.

Rebecca Matter

And that’s not even long-form copy. Every piece you mentioned in that list could be as little as one-two pages long…

So you could easily knock out that entire laundry list of projects in just a week or two… and have a killer writing pay-out before the month is even up!

If you do that for just two or three clients… you’re already looking at a six-figure income — right?

Nick Usborne

Absolutely! Just think about it…

Let’s say you just finished writing a few product pages for your client’s website and they’re super happy with how professional your work is…

Rebecca Matter

Which you know they will be when you’ve learned everything there is to know about writing kick-butt digital copy from THE master of digital copywriting…

So that’s more than 40 years of experience and insight you’ll have in your wheelhouse before you even get started writing

Nick Usborne

Ha ha, that’s true, Rebecca! Through my program you’re basically getting the ultimate shortcut…

Maze with a path broken through the walls to the center, the word 'Succes!' in the center

I’ve compressed my four decades of experience writing for the digital market into this one copywriting “bible” for you.

So you can take on even your first projects with total confidence…

That’s the plan here…

Then refer back to the program as many times as you want to make sure you’ve got it all just right…

AND be sure to knock it out of the park — every time.

It takes all the guesswork… all the years of trial-and-error that I went through the hard way… and it eliminates all that.

Rebecca Matter

That’s such a big thing, the confidence. It’s like skipping the “learning curve” and settling right into that comfortable, professional status.

Nick Usborne

Exactly. Actually, I’m rather jealous we didn’t have a resource like this around when I was getting started…

But anyway…

Like I said, you finish this one project for your client…

They LOVE your work…

And now they need ALL that other copy we’ve been talking about…

They need the blog posts and the articles and the e-newsletter and the promotional emails…

So hey, you’re a client, Rebecca, so obviously who do you think they’re going to ask to write this ever-growing list of content?

Rebecca Matter

YOU! It’s so much easier!

Nick Usborne

Why on earth would they want to go back out into the proverbial wasteland… searching for another writer when they’ve got YOU in their back pocket now… and they already KNOW you have what it takes to write for them?!

This is such a big deal — clients love to work with people they’re already comfortable with.

That’s how a lot of digital copywriters wind up only writing for one or two clients for years.

They’ve got plenty to keep them busy (and to keep their bank accounts full) without having to go out looking for more clients!

The work just keeps coming in, as much as they want.

Rebecca Matter

I know we’ve touched on this a bit before, but it really is a huge deal…

I know a lot of newer writers get intimidated by this idea of having to land clients…

Nick Usborne

I get that. I really do, even after all these years I have moments of nervousness myself sometimes! But this is less of an issue when you’re a digital copywriter.

Not only because of the sheer number of clients out there, but also because just about every one of them has the potential to be the last client you ever need.

That’s why it’s so easy for writers to go from “just getting started” to “I’m a full-time professional writer” in such a short period of time.

Rebecca Matter

It’s so true.

Digital copywriting — especially right now with demand BOOMING — really is the ultimate way for writers to lock in a fantastic writing income that they can depend on.

Literally no matter WHAT you want to write about too!

There’s no topic… no niche that digital copywriting doesn’t have a hand in these days.

Everyone knows the future of business is online…

Simply because that’s where their customers are.

It’s how we get our information…

It’s how we connect with people…

It’s how we make our decisions!

And so digital copywriting has grown into this massive umbrella writing opportunity…

This universal skill set that every writer needs to understand…

Because, to put it simply…

ALL of your potential clients need digital copywriting in some way, shape, or form. Period.

Which is why I’m so excited to be sharing this right now…

Because today, we’ve worked out a HUGE opportunity for our viewers here to get their hands on your comprehensive, new and improved program:

The Digital Copywriter’s Handbook

The Digital Copywriter’s Handbook Cover
Nick Usborne

Yes. And as you can see, we even updated the name after I revamped the program…

This program is more than just your average tutorial…

It’s professional-grade training… and an expert level resource…

It’s the total, comprehensive handbook you’ll refer to a million times during your first year as a digital copywriter…

Actually, Rebecca — I’ve seen you even had a physical copy all marked up with sticky notes…

Rebecca Matter

Yeah — back when we sent the Handbook out in an actual binder, I kept it on my desk and would literally refer to it…

Like I have to write a landing page, I’d look up the landing page section…

I have to edit a blog post, I’d look up your tips on blog posts…

And then I’d sticky note it — so over time, it became this crazy…

But yeah, anyway — it really is an easy-reference refresher you’ll turn to year after year and project after project.

Nick Usborne

Exactly.

Rebecca Matter

Plus — with the helpful breakdown of different projects your clients may ask for, you can treat it as a “just in time” learning tool…

Where you don’t have to master everything today…

You can get started with just one or two of the projects Nick outlines in the program…

Use the templates and helpful client advice to get your foot in the door with your first paying gigs…

And then, down the line, when one of your clients asks you to write a different kind of project you’re not as familiar with?

Doesn’t matter — No problem!

You can confidently say, “YES, I’ll do it!” and then fall back on Nick’s program to walk you through the whole thing, step-by-step.

Seriously, every writer should have access to this on hand.

Nick Usborne

That’s been one of my favorite ways of doing things too…

A client says, “Hey Nick, can you do such and such,” and I have no clue. But I say yes to the client, of course, and then I put down the phone and freak out because I’ve never done anything like it…

But that’s how I learned over the years.

And here — in this situation with The Digital Copywriter’s Handbook, you just open up the program and it’s all there for you.

Way simpler!

I really hope everyone takes advantage of this today, because I truly poured everything into making this the end-all program for digital copywriting.

I used to do a lot of training with large companies, everything I taught them, like everything, all my experience has been kind of poured into this kind of end-all program for digital copywriting.

Starting with the basic fundamentals about the industry you need to understand to be super effective as a digital writer…

Then diving right into the specifics of how to write all these different in-demand writing projects…

And then taking it all a step further…

I have an entire section in the program devoted to all the hard-won lessons I’ve learned over the years…

These are the lessons that can help you elevate your writing to “expert” quality right from the starting gate…

So from day one, you’ll be totally equipped to talk to clients about your work with confidence… and then blow them away with the quality of your writing…

Just by following a few simple guidelines.

Rebecca Matter

And Nick, you even included a bonus section where you jump back on video to go over real examples of actual digital copywriting projects you worked on for your clients…

Nick Usborne

Yes, we didn’t have this in there originally but we added it.

This is a big one because by looking over my shoulder at these projects, I’ll be able to walk you through my thought process in writing them…

Talk through how I structured each one and why…

And even give you some more specific tips on working through projects with clients — because that real-world experience is what sets professional writers apart from beginners…

So I’ll be able to give you all that insight as if YOU were the one writing these projects. Like looking over my shoulder.

Rebecca Matter

Being able to look over your shoulder is such a powerful training tool. And it’s the only one included in this course, right?

Nick Usborne

Not even close! There are actually a grand total of, I think, 12 “Look Over My Shoulder” videos that we put together for this course…

So in addition to the main program material… which itself is huge…

Once you cover a specific topic, you’ll be able to jump over to a “Look Over My Shoulder” video where I’ll go even more in-depth on some of the specifics that I think really bring it to life.

A bonus video on the subject of understanding website architecture
Rebecca Matter

Can you give us an example?

Nick Usborne

Oh, put me on the spot…

As an example, one of the first topics we’ll cover together in the program is kind of a “bird’s-eye view” of what makes digital copywriting so different…

This is early on, because it’s very, very important…

And how understanding how all the different pieces of digital copy that we’ve discussed fit together… to make one big super-efficient whole.

You’ll remember, Rebecca, this ties back into what I was saying about making sure writers have that “architect’s” perspective of the big picture.

So from day one, we’re going into the digital copywriting world with this perspective of how all the pieces fit together…

And then I also included a “Look Over My Shoulder” video session going even further into detail on it… using one of my OWN websites as the example!

So you can see it here…

Coffee Dective website

Turns out, I'm a complete coffee geek.

And this is this is my website about coffee.

And I'm going to use this in one of my “Look Over My Shoulder” demos so you can see what I've been up to… but also to walk through the structure of a website…

Rebecca Matter

So not only do writers get to watch you break down the pieces of an actual real-life example website…

They’ll get a peek at one of the websites you yourself have worked on and written!

Nick Usborne

That’s right. And that way, you’ll be able to see in real time how everything you write is ultimately going to work together…

Rebecca Matter

And it’s all right there for you.

Nothing has been left out of this amazing course…

Nick Usborne

No, it’s huge — started off big and has grown into this huge thing.

So it’s all in careful sections so it’s easy to navigate for you…

But this program really is the ultimate culmination of my work as a digital copywriter and teacher.

I really had a blast putting it together.

It was a ton of work — plus all these brand-new lessons… and hours spent sourcing all those up-to-the-moment examples you mention…

But digital copywriting really is fast becoming a universal market…

There is no kind of business I can think of that ISN’T ultimately turning to digital marketing in one way or another…

Everyone I speak to — lots of agents and clients — they all agree on this.

And that makes for an even bigger opportunity for writers.

Now granted — you have to know your stuff…

But I’ve made the whole program super accessible for writers at all levels…

So even a total beginner could go into this and get everything they need to confidently start writing for digital marketing clients.

Hey, I remember right at the beginning, Rebecca, you said, “Hey, take what you've used to train those big companies all over the world, and rebuild it to work for people who could just be beginners starting today, if you do that, we'll have something…”

And that's what we built.

I wanted to make sure that people had everything they need to be successful.

And thanks to AWAI’s help putting it all together, I feel super confident that I think we really have put together something very, very complete, very, very valuable.

I think it’s going to help a lot of people find their place in this digital world and really succeed as writers.

Rebecca Matter

I agree.

Okay, so — we want to get this program into your hands.

And the good news is, it’s ready now.

No waiting…

You can order it today… and be working on your first lesson in a matter of minutes.

A big button will appear at the bottom of this video that will take you to a page where you can get access.

But first, I wanted to do a quick review of everything you get — and how the program works.

Now, there’s so much in here — I’ll try to make this brief…

It starts with a powerful overview of what it means to be a digital copywriter… how your writing will impact your clients… and all the major opportunities that are open to you by choosing this path.

Then you’ll dive right into the nuts and bolts of what makes a good digital copywriter and step-by-step tips and templates on how to make sure your digital copy ALWAYS stands out above the rest.

And that’s only in the very start of this comprehensive program…

Because after that is where the real “nitty-gritty” starts!

Next, you’ll learn Nick’s proven strategies for creating web pages that sell.

If you master this ONE section, you can get ready to charge fees of $1,500, $2,000, even $3,000… just for writing 500-750 words!

From there, he’ll show you how to earn even more money by writing all the other digital projects your clients are going to need… and keep on needing

Not only a constant stream of copy that they can test, but also emails, e-newsletters, articles, and blogs to help them stay in touch with their customers and prospects.

With ongoing assignments like these from just a handful of clients, you’ll be able to hit the six-figure income mark in no time!

And to top it off, you’ll also get Nick’s “million-dollar” tips, techniques, and insights for writing blockbuster digital copy the Fortune 500s are looking for when they hire an expert like Nick.

Like he was talking about — how do we take it from these professional grade companies and bring it to you so you can have that same quality and bring it to you as a freelancer so you can follow in his footsteps and have that high-level quality of training and results for your clients?

Nick Usborne

Like I said, Rebecca, my goal was to make sure that every writer who goes through this program has everything they need to succeed:

When you’re done — and you start offering your digital copywriting services — you’ll have the skills (and confidence!) to quickly earn your clients’ trust… and their respect.

Rebecca Matter

And that’s still not even mentioning the additional resources and know-how you’ll get from the 12 “Look Over My Shoulder” training videos…

Nick Usborne

True, because we’ve only touched on one of them so far.

But these really are the soup-to-nuts tutorials that will show you visually how to take your work to the next level.

For example, you’ll learn all about the different kinds of web pages there are and how to create them…

You’ll learn how to ensure your client’s website has the best chance possible of getting seen by search engines like Google…

You’ll learn how best to send emails that really get the response you want instead of just disappearing in people’s inbox…

Down to the specifics of what format to send them out in…

Plus I’ll point you toward a bunch of my favorite tools to speed up your research and make it easier than ever to do all kinds of things online as a writer…

Seriously — some of these resources I use on more than half the writing projects I do. They’re total lifesavers.

I’m sure it’s the same with you Rebecca — you have go-to resources and tools you use all the time — so I wanted to share that…

The program really gets super granular… to make sure ALL the details are covered!

Rebecca Matter

So you see, Nick’s totally updated Digital Copywriter’s Handbook is really like a writing business in a box.

You can get it today… knowing nothing about writing or digital marketing — and be an expert by the time you’re finished.

At least in the minds of your clients.

— Richard Lacey

I mean it’s amazing…

Nick Usborne

Oh wow. Yes, it’s incredibly rewarding to watch the transformation of some of these writers…

I’ve had the pleasure of having writers come back to me sometimes years later… writers who started out knowing absolutely nothing about digital copywriting or how to write for clients…

And now they’re so successful some of them…

I’ve actually got one or two who turned around and taught me a thing or two after I helped them get started!

It’s absolutely one of the most rewarding things for me — I get quite moved, humbled by this idea that I can have this impact on writers — to see writers soak up the knowledge I can share…

And then go out into the world and transform their lives and become so successful at it.

Rebecca Matter

And I have to say Nick, that generosity and that love of teaching you have — it really comes out in your program…

And it’s why we have SO many writers who owe their success to you.

So on behalf of all of us at AWAI — just thank you for being so willing to share your experience and your expertise with our writers.

Nick Usborne

It’s my absolute pleasure, Rebecca. Thank you.

Rebecca Matter

And, of course, now… if YOU want to be the next lucky writer to launch your digital writing career with Nick’s help…
